Cutera GenesisPlus Laser

At Sunshein Podiatry Associates, we are committed to providing the best possible experience for our patients.

That means we are always investing in new, advanced, evidence-tested procedures and technologies that make treatment safer, more convenient, and more effective for the people we serve.

One notable example of this philosophy is the GenesisPlus Laser by Cutera. Since adding it to our practice, it’s helped us significantly improve overall cure rates for toenail fungus, while making the entire treatment process safer and more convenient for our patients.

Let’s learn a little more about this exciting technology and how it can help you finally overcome this unsightly condition.

But first, a little background.

What Are Fungal Toenails and Why Are They So Difficult to Treat?

Fungal toenail infections are caused by dermatophyte fungi that find their way under the nail, usually through a small gap between the nail and the nail bed. The fungi digest keratin, a protein in abundant supply in your nails.

Unfortunately, this process can cause very unsightly physical damage to the nail. In addition to obvious discoloration, your nail may appear overly thick, ragged, and crumbly. There may even be a mild, unpleasant odor.

Because the fungi have such an abundant supply of keratin, they really don’t ever go away on their own. Meanwhile, the nail itself provides a solid defense against topical medications, and oral medications tend to take a long time to work. (They may also have significant side effects for some people.)

What Is the GenesisPlus Laser by Cutera and How Can It Help with My Fungal Nails?

The GenesisPlus laser system has significantly improved the odds for those desperate to get rid of their fungal nails.

The system uses a pulsed laser with a wavelength of 1064nm, with an adjustable amount of energy per pulse. Laser light with these specific characteristics can pass through the damaged and thickened nail and directly target the fungi living underneath.

It does this without causing any pain or discomfort to you, without damaging any of your healthy tissues, and without any known side effects of any kind. It is an extremely safe treatment method, even for those with diabetes.

The GenesisPlus laser is a particularly excellent choice for people who are unable to take oral antifungal medications due to the risk of side effects, as it is a safe and effective alternative. But it can also be combined with other treatment methods, such as oral and topical medications, to provide even better long-term success rates.

What Can I Expect from Treatment?

A standard treatment course requires three separate sessions, spaced anywhere from two weeks to one month apart from one another. A few people may require one or two extra sessions to achieve maximum results.

The procedure itself is convenient, painless, and usually takes less than 30 minutes (though that depends on how many toes require treatment and how severe the infection is). You may feel a mild warming sensation, but there should be no discomfort during the procedure.

Many people do notice a slight improvement in their symptoms already after the first session. However, it may take 3-6 months or longer for the best results to emerge. Although laser is an effective way to kill the fungi causing the damage, it will still take time for the warped portions of the nail to be replaced by healthy, clear nail growth.

The GenesisPlus laser can be used on its own as a treatment for fungal toenails, but the best results tend to be achieved when multiple treatment approaches are used in combination. We’re happy to talk with you about whether oral or topical medications may be an appropriate component of your overall treatment plan.

Toenail fungi are a highly resilient and will fight to the bitter end. However, treatment using the GenesisPlus laser, combined if necessary with other treatment options, has a very high rate of success.

After the fungus has been successfully cleared, you should make sure you are washing your feet regularly, drying and disinfecting your shoes, and taking other appropriate steps to keep the fungus from coming back.

Other Uses of the GenesisPlus Laser

In addition to significantly improving treatment results for fungal toenails, the GenesisPlus laser may also be used to assist in other treatments, such as:

  • Wart removal
  • Nail matrix ablation (for permanent prevention of ingrown toenails)
  • Relieving neuroma pain
