Dress Shoes Could Affect The Biomechanics Of Avid Runners

Nov 23, 2017

For certain occasions, work interviews, or just for a night out with friends, dress shoes come in handy for a variety of reasons. While they are fashionable and trendy, some can have dangerous effects on your feet and alter their biomechanics. According to a study published in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research, certain high heels and dress shoes alter the way we run and exercise and other issues related to biomechanics.

Different dress shoes come with various toe shapes and this allows different amounts of pressure to be applied to the toes and the rest of the feet. This can have lasting effects on the ways in which our feet behave while running. Additionally, it is not uncommon to discover that the problems you have from high heels can be transferred to problems you have within your feet while running. “The muscular or postural problems you have sitting, standing, or walking are problems that may manifest during running” said Jay Dicharry, M.P.T., the director of the REP biomechanics lab at Rebound Physical Therapy in Bend, Oregon, and author of Anatomy for Runners.

If you suspect a problem with your biomechanics and believe it is causing foot pain, ankle pain, or walking instability, it is recommended to see a podiatrist, like Dr. Kevin Sunshein of Sunshein Podiatry Associates for immediate consultation, care, and treatment options.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body causing an interference with the biological structure and focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

– In 1974 biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination to the area.

Modern technology improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes providing a better understanding of podiatry concepts for biomechanics. Computers provide accurate determinations about the forces, moments and patterns of the foot and lower legs with the most important information captured.
