Telemedicine

Even in normal times, it’s not always easy to make time to visit the doctor. Hectic schedules, work and family responsibilities, and even lack of transportation can get in the way.

But these aren’t normal times, either. With the current COVID-19 pandemic drastically affecting all our lives, you may be wondering if seeing the foot doctor about a problem is something you can even consider at all anytime soon.

Fortunately, we can help. There’s a way for you to stay on top of managing your foot and ankle care, even when you are physically unable to come to our office:

Telemedicine.

What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine is when a doctor uses videoconferencing technology to provide clinical services to you, even when physically separated from one another.

Essentially, this allows either Dr. Sunshein to perform a remote visual inspection of your foot or ankle, communicate directly with you, and answer your questions – all while you remain in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Appointment types that work very well for a virtual consult include:

  • Visual inspections. We can visually inspect your foot or ankle over video and give you a diagnosis and/or recommendations on the next steps.
  • Check-up appointments. Your doctor can examine how a wound is healing, talk with you about how your rehab is going (after a previous treatment), or review previous lab or diagnostic results.
  • Questions and advice. Have a question about your health care and want answers from a real medical professional? Telemedicine is by far the easiest way to do it.

What to expect

Before scheduling your telemedicine appointment, please ensure that you have or will have:

  • A device capable of making and receiving video calls, such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop computer with a webcam and microphone
  • A reliable internet connection
  • A supported web browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari)
  • A private, quiet, and well-lit location to take the call

We also encourage you to have a trusted family member or friend present with you (who can provide assistance or help you take notes as needed).

Once we’ve scheduled a telemedicine appointment with you, we’ll send you a link that you will have to click to join our “virtual waiting room” when it’s time for your appointment to begin. (Remember, you will need to use one of the three supported browsers on your computer or mobile device—Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.)

From there, just enter your name and check in. When your doctor is ready for you, the call will begin!

The system we’re using, Doxy.me, is HIPAA-compliant and does not require any software downloads or user accounts to be created. We want the process to be as hassle-free as possible for you. That said, please reach out and call us anytime if you do have any questions.

Is telemedicine covered by insurance?

While telemedicine services have been increasingly covered by insurance companies, the answer depends on your specific provider and plan.

Please contact your insurance provider for the latest information on whether telemedicine is currently covered for you and to what degree.

What about services that can’t be provided remotely?

If you need an in-person treatment or procedure, such as diagnostic imaging, injections, wound care, etc., our office is still open and accepting patients at this time. We are doing our part to serve the needs of our community and help keep our patients out of the hospital and urgent care systems.
