MLS Laser Therapy

Some of the most impressive technological advancements humans make can be found in the field of medicine. Our medical community is continually finding new, innovative ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent medical problems.

Sunshein Podiatry Associates is committed to staying at the forefront of medical developments and technologies. A major example of this—and one we are quite proud to offer you—is MLS laser therapy we provide for an array of lower extremity injuries. Depending on your case, we may recommend this technology to treat the soft tissue injury causing you pain, discomfort, or impairing your ability to do your favorite activities.

If you have foot and ankle pain, you know it can affect every part of your life. To find relief from foot and ankle pain, talk to our doctor about MLS laser therapy.

What Is MLS Laser Therapy?

Multiwave Locked System (MLS) laser therapy is a noninvasive treatment that we use for treating foot and ankle pain. It uses two lightwaves simultaneously: one wavelength calms inflammation and reduces swelling and the other wavelength penetrates the nerves for pain relief. The procedure is painless and promotes healing.

During MLS laser treatment sessions, light energy penetrates deeply into your soft tissue and reaches damaged cells. The energy stimulates natural healing processes by speeding up cellular reproduction and growth. This advanced treatment option is particularly effective for soft tissues like muscles, ligaments, and tendons, all of which are found in great abundance in feet and are frequently affected by sports injuries. The specific light wavelengths produced by the MLS laser initiate strong anti-inflammatory responses by the cells in these tissues, which is essential for reducing swelling and pain.

Conditions MLS Laser Therapy Treats

MLS therapy is used to treat a variety of conditions that cause foot, ankle, and heel pain, including arthritis, bursitis, and plantar fasciitis. Laser therapy is also sometimes used as an integral part of treatment plans to address sports injuries and wounds. Both chronic and acute conditions can benefit from this type of therapy. Patients with chronic conditions typically continue to improve over multiple therapy sessions, while acute conditions are more likely to require only one to three treatment sessions. Dr. Sunshein will give you an assessment and discuss your options with you.

The Benefits of MLS Laser Therapy

MLS laser therapy is safe (FDA approved), painless, quick, noninvasive, and has no side effects. It effectively relieves pain and provides several additional benefits.

Improved Vascular Activity

It stimulates the formation of new capillaries, which reduces scar tissue, promotes rapid healing, and reduces the risk of infection.

Increased Metabolic

It increases blood flow, allowing more oxygen and nourishment to supply the area of concern.

Accelerated Cellular Growth and Tissue Repair

Damaged cells absorb the photon energy, which results in quicker healing and new growth of healthy cells.

Improved Immune Function

It stimulates immunoglobulins and lymphocytes, which fight infection as part of your immune system.

What To Expect During an MLS Laser Therapy Treatment

A session takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete. All you have to do is sit comfortably and try to hold still. A technician programs the robotic laser with your unique treatment plan. The robotic head moves over the treatment area several times while the laser beam does its work by penetrating the area.

Some patients feel nothing, while others feel a mild sensation. Patients typically start to feel the effects of the treatment after one to three sessions.

MLS Laser Testimonials

MLS laser therapy works—but you don’t have to just take our word for it. Hear what some of our patients have had to say!

My first treatment I noticed about a 50 percent decrease in my pain. By the time I finished—I believe I had six treatments—I am now able to wear any footwear. I have a minimum of 90 percent relief from any pain or neuropathy or any of the previous symptoms I had.

-Debra

On Monday I dropped something on my foot. Here we are Thursday, after my third treatment. It was pretty gruesome the first day, and now I’m up and walking with almost zero pain. The inflammation was cleared quickly thanks to this machine.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is laser therapy? How does it work?

Laser therapy uses light energy to reduce pain and aid in healing tissue. Energy penetrates deeply into damaged cells, increasing their activity. Exposure to the laser can help cells within tendons, ligaments, and muscles repair themselves.

What is MLS? How is it different than other forms of laser therapy?

MLS stands for “Multi-Wave Locked System.” It is a laser therapy technology that uses a combination of two wavelengths to produce beneficial results to areas of soft tissue injury. Whereas one direct laser wavelength acts quickly on inflammation, it is not as effective at reducing pain. The secondary wavelength of MLS, however, has a more immediate effect on pain by interfering with the neural transmission of pain to the higher brain centers. In short, one wavelength of MLS specializes in reducing inflammation, the other in reducing pain.

What conditions does MLS Therapy treat?

Conditions we commonly treat with MLS Therapy include: plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, sprains, strains, arthritis, bursitis, neuromas, peripheral neuropathy, ulcers, post-surgical sites, fractures, wounds, occupational injuries, and gout.

What are the benefits of MLS Therapy?
  • Non-invasive
  • Painless
  • Drug-free
  • No known side effects
  • Rapid relief of pain and reduction of swelling
  • Rapid improvement in blood circulation in area
  • Quicker repair of surface injuries, including ulcers and wounds
  • Timely healing of sprains and strains
What can I expect during a treatment?

A single treatment lasts only a few minutes. Some patients report a warm sensation in the area under treatment, but others report feeling nothing. There is no pain, heat, swelling, or redness.

What can I expect after treatment?

Positive results are often seen within 1-3 treatments. The average course of treatment can run from 7-10 sessions overall. Swelling is reduced and pain is rapidly relieved. Acute conditions often are resolved quickly, and chronic conditions can find long-term relief with regular treatments. The overall effects of MLS Laser Therapy build over time. That is why it is important for a full course of treatment to be run.

How many treatments are needed for results?

The first treatment begins to yield results for many patients. Treatments are cumulative, and are often delivered on a schedule of 2-3 times per week for 2-3 weeks. 7-10 sessions are often conducted total.

What advantages does MLS Therapy have over traditional low level lasers (LLLT)?

LLLTs can be attuned to reducing swelling or reducing pain, but not both effectively at the same time. MLS can achieve this via two different wavelengths that work in sync with each other. This is a patented system of synchronization that not only is engaged simultaneously, but reinforce the effects of each other.

How was MLS Therapy made and tested?

MLS Therapy was developed and tested under strict standards of biomedical research. The patented combination of wavelengths was first tested on cellular structures within in vitro cultures. It was then tested on animals, then in clinical trials run by major health organizations.
